177 Time Well Spent

177 Time Well Spent

The Yakama basin back in 1905 was home to water battles between  people wanting to use the wealth of rivers and creeks available in the state of Washington. Today, groundwater has become the new battle ground. Are the creeks and rivers connected to underlying groundwater aquifers and if so, is there enough water to meet current demands?  Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

Washington Department of Ecology focuses on protecting the natural environment in the state of Washington. A mission of this sort must deal with water in nearly every situation that the department is active. One of the rapidly growing concerns in the state of Washington is the drilling and use of permit exempt wells. Owners of these wells sometimes sidestep the rigorous permits needed to obtain a more formal water right in the state. Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

Fresno County has over 6,000 farms making it the leading farm county in the nation.  Unfortunately, drought continues to make it difficult for this County.  Low water years have already visited the area several times since the new millennium began.  When low water years happen surface water becomes scarce and groundwater is over pumped. How does the Fresno County Farm Bureau see resolution to this problem and where should their efforts  be placed? I visited Fresno County in 2009 and can tell you conditions have not improved. Water shortage has really become a deal breaker for Fresno County farmers.  Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.

97 A Farm Workers Worry

97 A Farm Workers Worry

California agriculture is a thirty-billion-dollar business that is very much dependent on the strong work ethics of the farmworker community. I met two farm workers in the Central Valley during the 2009 drought. I remember how that drought turned farms upside down across the western side of the valley. Farmworkers, Carlos and Rubin, realized the stark reality that when there is no water, there is no work. Ditches were dry and they didn’t know when more water would come. How does a farmworker and their family know if they will have employment next year? Water is a Many Splendor’ed Thing brings you another water relationship that has a personally significant impact to your life.
